About the Special Issue
The twenty-first century is increasingly characterised by a condition often described as 'permacrisis', a convergence of persistent and overlapping disruptions, including ecological degradation, global pandemics, political polarisation, economic instability, and widening social inequities. In such an atmosphere of sustained turbulence, literature assumes a critical function that extends beyond passive reflection. It becomes a dynamic site in which the human experience of crisis is shaped, interrogated, and rendered intelligible. While political rhetoric, media soundbites, and statistical data frequently reduce upheaval to abstract figures and policy debates, literary works illuminate the lived textures of disruption.
The primary aim of this Special Issue, Representations of Crisis in Literature, is to foreground innovative and interdisciplinary scholarship that examines how crises are narrated, aestheticised, contested, and reimagined across genres, periods, and cultural contexts. We invite contributions that explore literary engagements with war, displacement, environmental breakdown, pandemics, economic precarity, identity conflicts, technological anxieties, and existential despair. Particular emphasis is placed on studies that interrogate the narrative strategies, ethical implications, and cultural politics through which literature renders crisis both comprehensible and transformative.
We welcome original research articles, comparative studies, theoretical interventions. and methodological examinations that provide critical insight into the evolving poetics of crisis. Submissions that demonstrate cross-cultural perspectives, archival depth, interdisciplinary methodologies, or engagement with contemporary global challenges are especially encouraged. Through this Special Issue, we seek to curate a rigorous and timely body of scholarship that bridges historical literary traditions with present-day urgencies, highlighting literature’s indispensable role in shaping understanding, fostering resilience, and imagining alternative futures in an age defined by uncertainty.
